On April 3, 2025, the John Adams Institute invites Russell Shorto, author of Amsterdam and The Island at the Center of the World, to talk about his latest book, Taking Manhattan. Tracing the events following the ‘purchase’ of Manhattan by the Dutch West-India Company, he paints a picture of a diverse, innovative, and hardy city that forged its own path as a multiethnic capitalist society pioneered by the Dutch, before being swept up into the power structure of the British empire.
