On May 26th, join our colleagues at the John Adams Institute for an evening of four thought-provoking talks, co-hosted with the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), reflecting on the meaning of freedom at the end of May—a time traditionally dedicated to such reflection in the Netherlands.
Inspired by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “Four Freedoms”—freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear—our speakers will explore how these ideals have evolved and how they are being challenged today. Who is freedom for, and what does it protect us from?
From debates over free speech to the influence of religion on policy, and from academic restrictions to questions of justice and power, this event delves into the complexities and contradictions of one of democracy’s core values—both in the U.S. and Europe.
