Kai Hopen is a PhD candidate in the American studies department of the University of Groningen. His project is on “The MacArthur Fellowships and the Making of Contemporary American Literature.” His work analyzes the politics of literary MacArthur Fellows. The project builds on the institutional turn in literary studies and on present-day debates in Marxist literary criticism having to do with practical criticism and the historical-contextual paradigm of literary scholarship. Kai’s BA in English and research MA are from the University of Groningen, where he also spent a year teaching in the American studies department before starting on his PhD research.
