Two Internship Opportunities at the U.S. Mission to the Netherlands

The U.S. Mission to the Netherlands maintains and strengthens the diplomatic ties between the United States and The Netherlands. Not just in The Netherlands, but all over the world, U.S. Mission employees strive to protect and promote U.S. security, prosperity, and democratic values. United in our diversity, our motto reflects our spirit: one team, one mission!

We offer you the unique opportunity to intern at our Mission: you can experience what it is like to work in a diplomatic environment while bringing your valuable contributions to our team.

Non-U.S. citizens studying in the Netherlands

Students who live and study in the Netherlands and who are not U.S. citizens can apply for internships at the U.S. Embassy and Consulate in the Netherlands. Interns gain experience with U.S. foreign policy and diplomacy and will work in an international environment alongside U.S. diplomats. Interns apply directly to the Embassy in The Hague when vacancies are announced. All open intern positions are posted here. (create link)

The Foreign National Student Intern Program (FNSIP), is designed for students who are non-U.S. citizens seeking internships with the U.S. State Department at U.S. Missions outside the United States. The program benefits both Missions and students by providing students with valuable educational experience in U.S. Missions and by assisting Missions in accomplishing their mission goals. The purpose of the Program is to offer students the challenge of working in a foreign affairs environment while contributing to U.S.-Dutch diplomacy. There are no compensation or benefits attached to this internship. Interns are not employees of the Embassy, Department of State or the United States government.

Who can apply

The program is open to students who are not U.S. citizens, at least 18 years of age, who have graduated from high school or equivalent secondary school, and are enrolled in a trade school, technical or vocational institute, college, university or comparable recognized educational institution in the Netherlands. Students must be able to work in the Netherlands, which means having either EU citizenship, or a valid residency permit for the Netherlands. Students with U.S. dual citizenship are not eligible for this program but should apply for the U.S. citizen program (see below).

Additional requirements

Students applying for this program must be in good academic standing at their current educational institution and must provide a certified transcript verifying this. They must also obtain written permission from the educational institution in which they are enrolled.
